FDNY wins URISA Exemplary System in Government Award for Ground Zero GPS Recovery System Developed by LinksPoint
Norwalk, CT (September 3, 2002) - The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) has chosen the New York City Fire Department's mobile data recovery application, used during rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center disaster site, as its international Exemplary Systems in Government Award for 2002. The application was developed by LinksPoint, a leader in mobile location information systems.
The FDNY used LinksPoint's mobile data solution to automate the process of locating and recording information that was critical during the stages of rescue, recovery and investigation at the WTC. The FDNY Recovery System employed ruggedized handheld computers, LinksPoint GPS receivers and LinksPoint's field data collection software to collect accurate location information for items and human remains collected at the site. All of the data recorded by FDNY firefighters using LinksPoint's solution was uploaded to a central GIS database for analysis and investigation of the attacks. The handheld solution also enabled the FDNY to complete their duties more safely and efficiently, and give a more accurate representation of the disaster site.
"The task of handwriting notes describing the location and description of thousands of pieces of equipment and human remains, and then transferring the information to a database only complicated the recovery process," said Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer, FDNY. "Having the locations of this evidence is crucial. The GPS Recovery System, developed by LinksPoint, simplified this whole process."
"Providing the FDNY with a solution to support their efforts during a treacherous and incredibly challenging job, as well as facilitating the investigation into the attacks, were very important to us," said Strite Potter, president of LinksPoint. "This was about providing the very best solution to New York's firefighters as they were forced to confront and work in unspeakable conditions."
