Beating
high fuel costs with GPS
According
to the AAA, today's national average price per
gallon of gasoline was $2.82 per gallon. Diesel
was higher at $2.89.This is compared to
$1.91 and $2.03 a year ago, respectively. Ouch.
With historic
high price records being set and then broken
almost daily, containing fuel costs has risen to
the top of the priority list for many fleet
managers.
You can look to a
number of solutions to cut waste and unnecessary
travel. One place you probably haven't looked is
up...to the Global Positioning System, that is.
These satellites may be more than 12,000 miles
away in space, but they can help you save miles,
and cut fuel costs right hear on Earth.
Here's how:
- GPS vehicle
history tracking - LinksPoint's
RouteTrak solution gives you the tools to
use GPS to monitor where your vehicles travel.
It identifies out-of-route and out-of-hours
mileage, and increases driver accountability.
And it does it all without the added cost of
wireless airtime charges.
- GPS-based
navigation - A second way to use GPS to
save fuel costs is with accurate turn-by-turn
navigation with a solution like LinksPoint's
Field Force Navigator. What this means is
taking the same type of navigation technology
as found in Mercedes, Acuras and other
high-end automobiles - and putting it to work
for your fleet. In this case, you save time as
drivers don't sit by the side of the road
looking at maps between stops, but more
importantly, you save fuel because drivers
take the most direct routes to their stops -
and don't waste fuel driving around lost.
To put in in
perspective, if you were to save one gallon of
fuel per day per vehicle as a result of a GPS
solution, that would translate into over $700
in savings per vehicle per year. And that's
before you've factored in the labor savings and
increased productivity that GPS also provides.
The next time
you're on the road and you find
yourself filling up, look at the
price on the pump. Then multiply that by 10, 100 or
1000 for the number of vehicles in your fleet. Then think
about how LinksPoint's GPS solutions can help
you actively take control of fuel cost and waste
in the field.
